Kelis speaks out about her failed marriage with rapper Nas for the first and she’s spilling piping HOT tea. She alleges the rapper would get so drunk where he would physically and mentally abuse her. She said he was a cheater and she also explained why he’s a total fraud. Get your tea cups, it’s a lot inside…
We thought the nasty custody battle between Nas and Kelis was over when a report was released that they had agreed on sharing joint custody of their 8-year-old son Knight. Then, Nas filed paperwork earlier this month asking a judge to penalize his ex-wife for not letting him see their son on his scheduled visitation. So yeah, their drawn-out custody battle is still going on.
However, Kelis is no longer keeping silent!
The “Milkshake” singer opens up for the first time about her failed marriage to the Queensbridge rapper. And the details about what went down behind-the-scenes are shocking! We say this because during the time they were together, they were #RelationshipGoals. But after they decided to call it quits and Kelis filed for divorce, we started to learn SOME of the details about their rocky relationship.
During an interview with Hollywood Unlocked, the “Bossy” singer gets uber candid about why she decided to divorce the “Illmatic” rapper while she was 7-months pregnant with their son.
The Bounty & Full chef says they would literally fight each other at times.
“There was a lot of mental and physical abuse,” she reveals. “Did he hit me?…..Mmm hmmm. Did I hit him back?…..Mmm hmmm.”
Kelis says when news broke about Chris Brown assaulting Rihanna in 2009, she had bruises all over her body from Nas. She said seeing that go down in the media is one of the reasons she decided to call it quits.
“When the Rihanna and Chris Brown pictures came out I thought about coming out because I also had bruises all over my body,” she reveals. “But I didn’t say anything because I’m private. But seeing her the way she looked and then looking at myself… I felt embarrassed.”
The 38-year-old singer, who was 22 when she started dating the rapper, says she and Nas shared some intense highs and lows throughout their relationship. And when it got low, it got really dark. She said Nas would get so drunk, black out and that’s when he was at his worst.
“An intense low….we had a lot. It was really dark. A lot of drinking,” she shares. “A lot of mental and physical abuse and it got to the point where if I wasn’t pregnant, I might have stayed with him.. I was pregnant and it was a mess and I felt like I wasn’t going to bring a child into this.”
After the abuse, Kelis says Nas would buy gifts. While she enjoyed getting them, she says that got old quick. The smallest things would end up setting him off. One time Jay Z said “Hi” to her at an event and that set Nas off. And this didn’t even happen during the time Hov and Nas were beefing. She said at that particular time, Nas had signed to Hov. She said it didn’t matter who it was or what it was, there was always an issue.
The singer says Nas is so obsessed with his image and that’s why people think he’s this “phenomenal person” and why people think she’s a “crazy b*tch” because she doesn’t care about all that. She said he NEEDS attention and loves it.
Kelis aired out Nas’ bad co-parenting skills, revealing he just started being semi-consistent within the last two years. But before then he was NOT involved in his son’s life except for when there’s a “photo-op.” Bloop!
“A parent isn’t about showing up when you feel like it,” she says. “You can’t not show up for months and then show up and try to make up your own [visitation] schedule.”
She said she wouldn’t tell their son Nas was coming until he was a the curb to keep him from getting disappointed. Damn. As for Nas’ relationship with Nicki Minaj, Kelis says she would love for them to get back together because all of their recent drama started after they called it quits.
Kelis also calls Nas out on being fake:
“You are a FRAUD! You talk all this Black empowerment and you’re a fraud.”
Wow.
As for her next move, she has invested in The Jane Club, a work and community space with an emphasis on women and the working mother. She says women have to stick together and to continue to fight.
Take a listen to the full interview below. She starts talking about her past with Nas at the 14-minute mark.
Carmen Bryan (the mother of Nas's first child) also alleged in her 2007 memoir "It's No Secret" that the NYC rapper physically abused her.
Hmm..how do you all think Nas will respond to this?
