Happy Mother's Day

This coming Sunday, May 8th, is the day set aside to honor and celebrate mothers.  We in this household owe so much to our mothers, that just one day doesn't seem sufficient.  Because of the many conflicting schedules in our families, we will not get to spend time with our moms this weekend, and my husband and I will be gone on Sunday.  But we plan to treat our moms to a proper celebration later this month.  However, I was in the mood to set a pretty table, so this tablescape is for my mother and mother-in-law and all the mothers who might happen to visit my blog.  I'm joining all the nice people at Between Naps On The Porch for Tablescape Thursday, and thanks again to Susan, for hosting this every week.

Our David Austin roses are blooming this week so I am using some of those for my centerpiece.

They are so pretty and SO fragrant; I wish we had a fragrance button on our computers so that everyone could click it and smell these wonderful roses.

Unfortunately their bloom period is brief, so I knew I only had a small window of time to use them for a tablescape.  I will do another post soon about these roses, but for now, let's celebrate our moms.:-)

This table is just very simple and old fashioned.  Once again, I used white dinner plates and the white "Butterfly Meadow" salad plates.

I promise I do have other dishes, but I am just now discovering how versatile white dishes really are.  I had originally planned to do a table with my blue and white dishes, but I went with solid white because I wanted the pink roses to be the star.  The small fruit bowls are from my Royal Doulton "Juliet", but they have such a small amount of pattern, that I felt they wouldn't be distracting.   I used an iced tea and a water goblet at each place, and pale pink taper candles.

I really love this little book, "Prayers for a Mother's Day". It's a collection of prayers by Ruth Bell Graham and other mothers.

The illustrations are by Helen Allingham and they're so charming!  Helen Allingham was born in Derbyshire, England in 1848, and is famous for her watercolors of the English countryside, and the picturesque farmhouses and cottages of Surrey and Sussex.

I didn't use any serving pieces -- just the pink Depression Glass plate and a silver water pitcher (the camera and tripod are reflected in the water pitcher).

I found the little salt and pepper shaker and silver tray at a local antique mall a few months ago.  I just love their shape!

The salt and pepper said "Irice", NY, on the bottom.  I found a pair identical to mine for sale online because I was curious about the makers.  I was not familiar with Irice.  According to the website called Cherished Collectibles, Irice stands for Irving W. Rice and Co., Inc., and they were founded in 1905.  "The company was launched in New York City as a seller of head vases, perfume bottles, salt and pepper shakers, crystal accessories and crystal table gifts".  I don't know the maker of the little tray, but it was displayed with the salt and pepper shakers, so I bought it.  I thought it made a pretty set.

So that's my table, folks.  I like the simple color combinations of white, ivory, pink and silver. An old-fashioned table with old-fashioned roses like we might have found at our grandmother's house when we were children.

Happy Mother's Day to both of my mothers, and I hope you all enjoy the pictures!

This week I'm also linking to Seasonal Sundays hosted by the Tablescaper.
